Newry General Store & Cafe

Nestled in the heart of Newry Mill Village, the Newry General Store & Cafe is a vibrant hub of community life. Originally established in 1893 as part of the cotton mill operation, the store quickly became a beloved gathering spot for locals and workers alike. Fast forward to today, and this historic building has been lovingly restored to its former glory by John Eargle, the M. Peters Group, and a dedicated team of designers.

With a deep respect for the store's rich heritage, John has created a welcoming space where people can gather to enjoy locally sourced food, unique artisanal products, and good company. Whether you're a longtime resident or a curious visitor, we invite you to come explore the story of the Newry General Store & Cafe and join us in celebrating the enduring spirit of this special place.

The Mill Village of Newry

The village of Newry was established in 1893 with the brick cotton mill and the general store being the heart and soul of the village. Founded by William Ashmead Courtenay, a former Charleston, SC mayor from 1879-1887. Newry got its name from Courtenay’s ancestral home in Ireland where some of his family immigrated from in the 1790s.
